Trails work best for me if I keep them short (basic trail about 3.5 miles) and put in lots (about 12) of checks and false trails. This gets the knitting circle back in about 1:05 and with lots of checks and FTs, the FRBs get to run much further. This tends to keep the pack together.

To get a feel for laying a trail, you really need to solve some checks yourself. Try checking out at least one check per week for a few runs before your trail.

A beer stop is always welcome!

You'll get more complaints for a run that's too long than slightly too short. Don't underestimate how long the checks will take.

Good territory and a decent pub help but the major thing to get right is the weather.

One important thing sometimes forgotten is to make sure that the trail is obvious for those following on afterwards, either because they have checked in the wrong direction or have started late. This can be delegated to a separate Checkin' Chicken, but many hares prefer to do it themselves.
Whoever does it, once the pack has passed, the trail should be obvious; checks and false trails are for slowing the FRB's down, not making it hard for people to catch up!
